What in the world is a wellness coach and what would it be like if I had one?
Good questions! On this page, you will learn what kind of results you might expect if you work with New Day Wellness. You'll hear how others have benefited from my services. You will get an idea what kinds of issues I have dealt with before (either with a client or in my own life) and a sense if you could benefit from my experiences. Wellness coaching is not for everyone. If you have both the desire and the motivation to make the behavioral changes that would likely improve your health, then I am here for you. If you have been TOLD to change a behavior, but you really don't buy it, then I won't likely be helpful, other than to provide supportive evidence that a change really would be beneficial. So read on, and find out.

It is possible to find the time! Exercise is so important in the management of cystic fibrosis. It has been shown over and over that an exercise regimen improves quality of life, reduces the feeling of shortness of breath, and delays the deterioration of lung function. So why not do it? Time. "Time is so full of school, work, treatments, eating...etc. When would exercise fit in and where would I start?" I get it. I've been there.
You will begin to see that you actually do have some control in your life-control over what you do. As you begin to make small changes in your behaviors and see the results start happening, you gain self-efficacy - the confidence that you can actually produce the desired results in your life. With increased self-efficacy comes a sense of empowerment that cannot be described-and is not often felt when living with a disease that often seems to run your life. This applies to any life-long disease, or life-long effects of a disease such as cancer. You will begin to trust that life can get back to "normal" again, a NEW normal, perhaps, but still fairly normal.
Disease and the stress of disease can be draining-especially when the immune system is on overdrive. You also never know when or how bad the next flare will be, and the uncertainty can be paralyzing. I work with you to focus on what is possible and what you can do today-this moment, to improve your life situation. This may be adding gentle movement to your day. It may look like eating more healthful foods. It may be finding a support network. Whatever it may look like for you, we will discover it together, and then you will take charge of what you can.
Weight management is an issue for so many people. The majority need or want to lose weight, but there are also a surprising number of chronic illnesses characterized by muscle wasting and weight loss. People with this issue are often told, "I wish I had your problem" jokingly-but it's no joke. Then there are those who just can't seem to get down to a healthy weight. They have tried every "diet" imaginable! They are tired of Phase I, darn it (they have probably started over numerous times). These people are great to work with, because I don't believe in diets! Clients love it when I say that! I believe in healthy foods and healthy patterns of eating, period. Oddly, this philosophy works, whether the issue is weight loss, or weight gain (ok, so I'll probably throw some exercise in as well).

What makes New Day Wellness unique?
Coaching is a new and rapidly growing business. There are thousands of new and experienced "life coaches" out there. Wellness coaching is an ever-expanding niche market under the "life coach" umbrella. There are even several "chronic illness" coaches out there. Why pick New Day Wellness?
First, New Day Wellness is a federally approved 501(3)(c) tax-exempt organization (non-profit). I am not in this business to make money, but to help an under-served market. As such, my pricing structure is well under market rate, and sliding scale fees are available if necessary.
Second, I get it! Although many chronic illness coaches suffer from chronic illnesses themselves, not many also have the medical background and visceral understanding of what goes wrong with the human body than an Anatomic and Surgical Pathologist with cystic fibrosis.
Finally, I am passionate about maintaining fitness and optimizing wellness. Regardless of what is wrong with our bodies, there is much we can do to make improvements and to improve the life that we have. I know this from my own experience, and it is my mission to help others recognize this in their own lives.
