Individual wellness coaching
For those with chronic illness, the concept of "wellness" may seem crazy, but it is not. We all have an optimum state of wellness. It is that place where we know we are doing all that we can to take care of our health, and it is in that place that our bodies feel the strongest.
Goals of Wellness Coaching
Learn to manage time in such a way that your health becomes top priority
Establish a regular pattern of exercise that is appropriate for you
Advance toward your optimal quality of life
Eat to fuel your body in the way it needs for ideal functioning
Develop effective strategies for managing the stress of illness
What You Can Expect From Wellness Coaching
You will determine how your own personal vision for wellness looks. You will understand what motivates you about that vision and what strategies you will use to overcome obstacles in your path toward that vision.
You will set specific, measurable, actionable, realistic and time-limited goals in the direction of your larger Wellness Vision.
I will support you in determining what those goals should be (will they add to your quality of life?) and in developing a plan of action toward attaining these goals. I will be with you step-by-step as you dance along the path toward YOUR ideal state of wellness.
The process will result in lasting change in behaviors that will accompany you throughout the rest of your life.
Wellness Coaching Process
- Introductory Session (no charge)
This complimentary session is an information gathering telephone call that usually lasts approximately 30 minutes. In it, you will learn about how coaching works and what it would be like to work with me. I would learn more about you and what you would like to improve upon in your life.
- Initial Session
This session usually lasts from 60 to 90 minutes. It is usually done on the telephone, but can also be done in person. Before this session, you will have filled out an extensive, on-line questionnaire, and we will use this to further clarify how your wellness could be improved. You will create a mental picture, or Wellness Vision, which will guide our subsequent work together. You will understand what motivates you about that vision, why it is important to you, and how your life will be better as you work your way toward actually living that vision. You will also anticipate the obstacles that will inevitably come up, and develop strategies for dealing with them.
With that vision in mind, you will set several Long-Term Goals (3-5) in the areas of exercise, nutrition, weight management, stress management, or health management. Keep in mind that both the wellness vision and these long term goals are not static. They can be modified at anytime in our work together.
At the end of this call, you will set some Short-Term goals to work on during the time between sessions. These will be small, achievable tasks that will take you in the direction of your long-term goals.
- Follow-up Sessions
These comprise the actual coaching process. These calls generally last 30 minutes, and their frequency depends on the coaching program you choose. Most people choose weekly calls when they begin wellness coaching. In addition, I am always available by email or by short phone calls between sessions.
During these calls, we discuss your situation, and how you managed your goals for the previous week. We look at what challenges came up, and how you handled them (or didn't). There is actually much to be learned from the times you DON'T meet your goals. At the end of each session, you will have an action plan for the coming week.
Slowly but steadily, week-by-week, you'll progress toward your vision of yourself at your optimal wellness in spite of a chronic disease.
